Nigeria Customs Trains Officers on New Tax Policies to Enhance Compliance

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in partnership with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), has commenced training for its officers on the Federal Government’s new tax policies to ensure compliance.
The two-day training, which took place from June 17 to 18, 2026, at the Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, attracted members of the Management Team, Comptrollers, Superintendents, and other junior officers.

While declaring the training open on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Finance, Administration and Technical Services, DCG Kikelomo Adeola, stated that the programme became necessary in view of recent changes introduced into the nation’s tax administration process.
“As a Service entrusted with a critical role in national revenue generation, we must remain abreast of evolving tax policies and ensure strict compliance with our statutory obligations. This training is designed to equip our officers with the requisite knowledge to navigate the new tax regime effectively and uphold the highest standards of professionalism and accountability,” DCG Adeola said.

She reiterated the Service’s commitment to tax compliance, noting that officers must remain well informed on tax matters, particularly as the Service continues to play a pivotal role in government revenue collection.
Adeola stressed that tax compliance is not merely a statutory requirement but also a reflection of the Service’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and national development.
“By investing in the capacity of our personnel, we are positioning the Service to adapt seamlessly to emerging fiscal reforms while sustaining public confidence in our operations,” she said.

In her remarks, Assistant Director of Tax at the NRS, Victoria Udo, emphasised that Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) remains one of the most reliable mechanisms for collecting personal income tax, noting that compliance extends beyond legal obligations to include access to tax clearance certificates and other financial opportunities.
Udo urged participants to take advantage of the training by asking questions and sharing experiences, adding that a better understanding of the new tax laws would enhance the efficiency with which they discharge their responsibilities.
