The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the non-payment of allowances to Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, and their officials.
The Super Eagles, camped at the Rive Hotel in Rabat, Morocco ahead of the 2026 World Cup playoff against Gabon on Thursday, skipped training on Tuesday due to unpaid allowances by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) dating back to 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Reacting to the development on Wednesday, Obi expressed disappointment that the Super Eagles, who consistently give their best in representing Nigeria, are being owed their allowances.
“We always seem to find money to waste on needless lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag, bring us pride, and serve with dedication. That is what is found in a ‘now disgraced country.” he stated.
Obi noted that when those who serve their country are not treated with dignity, it sends the wrong message to the youth, that hard work and service are not rewarded.
“Those who represent Nigeria deserve to be paid promptly and treated with respect. We must do better,” he added.
