Obi Blasts President Tinubu Over Repeated Grid Collapse, Calls It Broken Campaign Promise

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the repeated collapse of the national grid.

ThelensNG reports that the national grid collapsed twice within four days in January 2026 — first on Friday, January 23, and again on Tuesday, January 27.

Reacting to the power failures on Wednesday, Obi recalled President Tinubu’s 2022 campaign promise in which he said, “If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.”

However, he decried that the grid has collapsed twice in January 2026 even though the month is not yet over.

“Last year, it collapsed about twelve times,” Obi stated, noting that this reality sharply contradicts the President’s promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian.

He continued: “At the same time, the President is on another foreign trip, this time to Turkey, a country of about 87 million people — roughly a third of Nigeria’s population. Yet Turkey generates and distributes over 120,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria struggles with less than 5% of that capacity.”

The former Anambra State governor described the contrast as both striking and painful, and appealed to President Tinubu to remain at home and confront the nation’s problems.

“At this rate, we may soon hear of trips to Palau or Vanuatu while critical issues remain unattended at home,” he asserted, emphasising that the collective preoccupation appears to be the next election rather than how to ensure good governance.

He further urged Nigerians to join hands in demanding accountability and responsible leadership, in order to save citizens from the indignity and suffering caused by persistent bad governance.
