Dickson Admits Primary Challenges as NEC Approves NDC Election Results

The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has acknowledged that there were challenges recorded during the party’s recently concluded nationwide primary elections, even as the National Executive Committee (NEC) endorsed the results and reaffirmed the party’s readiness for the 2027 general elections.
The NEC meeting, the party’s second, was held in Abuja on Wednesday and brought together the NDC’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, members of the National Working Committee, state chairmen, and other stakeholders from across the country.
Reflecting on the meeting in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dickson disclosed that the primaries provided an opportunity for the party to test its internal democratic structures, noting that while the exercise was largely successful, there were challenges and disagreements in some locations.
He commended the commitment of aspirants at all levels, including governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly contestants, as well as party officials, volunteers, and supporters who participated in the primaries and NEC deliberations.
Following a review of reports from across the federation, the NEC ratified and endorsed the outcome of the nationwide primary elections, while commending electoral committees, screening and appeal panels, and party officials for ensuring the successful conduct of the exercise.
Dickson, however, noted that the party has resolved to strengthen internal cohesion through intensified reconciliation, consultation, and engagement with stakeholders across the country, urging members to remain united and focused on building the party ahead of 2027.
As part of its resolutions, the NEC approved the introduction of electronic voting for future congresses and primary elections, alongside plans to strengthen digital membership registration and data management systems aimed at improving transparency and credibility.
The committee also resolved to intensify grassroots mobilisation and expand membership nationwide, while strengthening party structures at all levels as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
The NEC further reviewed aspects of the country’s electoral framework, including provisions of the Electoral Act and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reaffirming the party’s commitment to pursuing legal and constitutional means where necessary to ensure electoral fairness and a level playing field.
Dickson stated that the meeting ended with renewed optimism as party leaders expressed confidence in the unity and future of the NDC.
“The best is still ahead of us,” he added.
