The Federal Government and the Imo State Government have agreed to the temporary closure of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, from October 20, 2026, for runway rehabilitation, resurfacing, and extension works.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, saying the closure was expected to last approximately 25 days.
Keyamo stated that the decision followed consultations with Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, and other critical stakeholders in the state and the South-East region.
He explained that the intervention was necessary to improve aviation safety, operational efficiency, and the airport’s capacity ahead of the Christmas travel season.
The Minister disclosed that the rehabilitation will involve repairs to deteriorated sections of the runway pavement, treatment of extensive surface cracks, filling of potholes, and resurfacing of affected areas, alongside the planned runway extension.
He affirmed that the project was a joint effort between the Federal Government, through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Imo State Government.
Keyamo acknowledged the Imo State Government’s contribution to the runway extension project, describing the collaboration as an example of what could be achieved when different levels of government work together in the public interest.
When completed, the works are expected to restore the runway to a safer and more reliable operational condition and improve its capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, including wide-body aircraft, subject to applicable operational and regulatory requirements.
The Minister noted that the timing of the project was important as passenger traffic and flight movements to Owerri and other parts of the South-East traditionally increase during the Christmas travel season.
While acknowledging that the temporary closure would cause inconvenience to passengers and other airport users, Keyamo appealed for their understanding and cooperation, stressing that aviation safety could not be compromised.
He added that the Federal Government would continue to engage the Imo State Government, airlines, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure proper coordination and minimise disruption to travellers.
Passengers scheduled to travel through the airport during the closure period were advised to contact their airlines for information on flight cancellations, rescheduling, and alternative travel arrangements.
Keyamo further stated that the confirmed closure and reopening dates would be communicated through the appropriate official channels.
