Manchester United have announced the dismissal of manager Ruben Amorim, a day after the club drew 1-1 with Leeds United at Elland Road.
Following the result, Amorim, 40, criticised the club’s hierarchy in his post-match press conference, intensifying tensions between the ownership and the manager amid ongoing inconsistency under his leadership.
Amorim officially took charge of the Red Devils on November 11, 2024, after the club announced his appointment on November 1.
However, in a statement released on Monday, January 5, 2026, the club confirmed the departure of the Portuguese coach after 14 months in charge.
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United. Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May 2025.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity to achieve the highest possible Premier League finish,” the statement read.
United expressed gratitude to Amorim for his time at the club and affirmed that Darren Fletcher will take the helm on an interim basis. “The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
Amorim managed United for 63 games, recording 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 losses. He also led the club to a runner-up finish in the 2024/2025 UEFA Europa League, where they lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester United currently sit sixth in the table with 31 points from 20 matches in the ongoing 2025/2026 Premier League campaign.
