The President of the African School of Governance (ASG), Mr. Kingsley Moghalu, has called for an end to the politicisation of traditional stools in Nigeria, describing it as one of the country’s greatest tragedies.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Moghalu noted that politicisation has always existed, referencing Ghana’s traditional leadership system, which is different.
He wrote: “One of the greatest tragedies of the Nigerian state – which has led to a massive decline in values and a rise in vices – is the power of the government to appoint and dethrone traditional rulers.
“This did not begin today. The British colonialists instituted it. It’s different in Ghana, where significant traditional rulers are hereditary or at least not appointed by, and cannot be dethroned by the government.”
The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria added: “The politicisation of traditional stools is something we need to end.”
