The Chairman and founder of BUA Group, Mr. Abdul Samad Rabiu, has disclosed that he will fulfil his $500,000 pledge to Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, despite their 4-2 loss to host nation Morocco on penalties on Wednesday.
Nigeria held Morocco to a goalless draw after 120 minutes of action in the semi-final at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat. However, the Super Eagles were defeated in the penalty shootout following misses from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi, while goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saved Hamza Igamane’s spot kick.
Rabiu had earlier promised the Super Eagles a $500,000 reward should they defeat the host nation, following their 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-final.
His words: “Congratulations to our Super Eagles players on a brilliant victory against Algeria! You have lifted the spirit of the nation, and we proudly cheer you on as you prepare for the semi-finals.
“To encourage you, I pledge USD $500,000 to the players upon winning the semi-final, with an additional USD $50,000 for every goal scored. Should you go on to win the final, I further pledge USD $1,000,000, plus USD $100,000 for each goal scored in the final.
“Wishing you continued success as you carry Nigeria forward. Keep making Nigeria proud. Proudly Nigerian.”
Despite the defeat, Rabiu commended the team’s spirit and performance, noting that sometimes the best efforts do not produce the desired outcome.
“To our brave Super Eagles, You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Rabiu acknowledged that the passion, unity, and commitment displayed by the players were what truly mattered.
He stated that Eric Chelle’s men left everything on the field and deserved recognition, describing their performance as worthy of celebration.
“As a token of appreciation for your remarkable journey and effort, I am still going ahead to fulfill the pledge of $500,000 USD. This is in recognition of your hard work, dedication, and the joy you have brought to our nation,” the philanthropist affirmed.
He added: “Keep your heads high, Super Eagles – the experience, lessons, and spirit will fuel even greater success next time. Nigeria will always be proud of you, and we believe in your future victories!”
