Customs Intensifies Border Security in Ogun Ahead of Elections

The Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has stepped up border security operations ahead of the forthcoming elections, with a high-level visit to the palace of the Olu of Ilaro in Ogun State as part of efforts to curb illegal importation of dangerous goods.

Led by the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Oladapo Afeni, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, to strengthen collaboration with border communities critical to national security.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Deputy Superintendent of Customs Chado Zakari, said the visit formed part of strategic pre-election measures to eliminate the movement of small arms, light weapons and illicit narcotics through Ogun State’s land borders.

Addressing the monarch during the visit, Afeni emphasised the strategic importance of Yewaland due to its proximity to international frontiers. ”Our borders must not become gateways for elements seeking to destabilise our democratic process,” stated DC Afeni.

“As we approach the elections, the Nigeria Customs Service is intensifying its Zero Tolerance policy on the smuggling of dangerous goods. We are here to seek the royal blessing and the cooperation of the community to ensure that our land borders remain hostile to smugglers and traffickers.”

He outlined proactive measures being implemented by the command, including establishing direct communication channels with border community leaders, increased visibility and 24-hour surveillance of known smuggling routes and unapproved crossings, as well as rigorous inspection of transit goods to prevent concealment of lethal items.

In his response, Oba Olugbenle commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its proactive approach and reaffirmed the commitment of the Yewa people to maintaining peace and order.

“The throne will continue to sensitise our youths and residents against aiding or abetting any form of illegal trade,” the monarch said. “We want an election that is free of violence, and that starts with ensuring that weapons do not find their way into the hands of unscrupulous individuals.”

As part of the tour, the Customs Area Controller also visited other key border communities, including the palace of the Onihumbe of Ohumbe, Oba Adekola Oje Oladokun, and the Olu of Owode, Oba Mathew Akindele.

During the engagements, Afeni reiterated that national security is a collective responsibility and urged traditional rulers to continue sensitising their subjects, particularly the youth, on the dangers of smuggling.

“We are not here to hinder trade, but to facilitate legitimate trade. However, the law remains the law. By working closely with the Onihumbe, the Olu of Owode, and the people of Obele border town, we can create a corridor that is hostile to smugglers but welcoming to honest businessmen.”
