Nigerians Lament 200% Hike in MTN’s 15GB Data Plan

Nigerians have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express their outrage over MTN’s increment in its weekly 15 Gigabytes (GB) data plan from ₦2,000 to ₦6,000, representing 200 per cent increase.

This comes weeks after the Federal Government (FG) and Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved 50% hike in the cost of telecommunications services amid the economic challenges.

Expressing his displeasure with the development on Tuesday, Silva, with the X handle @TheSilvapr wrote: “Nigeria is a very difficult place to live in honestly. MTN waking up one day to increase their weekly 15gb data from 2k to 6k without prior warning is textbook insanity. That’s 24k in a month, almost the minimum wage of the country on data, bruh, this is hell.”

Emmanuel, @iam_clive said: “From 2k to 6k, that’s an increase with 200%. We need to boycott MTN from now on cos it’s not funny anymore. We too dey survive for this country na why them go dey do whatever they want.”

“NCC approved 50% tarriff hike on telecoms in Nigeria. A price increase from 2k to 6k for the same 15GB weekly data plan is a 200% increase. A 50% hike is supposed to 3k. Good luck to all the parties involved. As for me, I’m not buying that plan again. MTN well-done,” @limasyre posted.

@officialdey1 stated: “Bro!!! MTN gonna lose customers because I don’t understand how you will raise the cost of 15GB data from 2k to 6k.”

Olatunji, with the X handle @ObaDosunmu tweeted: “I’m not even mad at the fact that MTN increased a 15gb data plan from 2k to 6k, I’m mad at the fact that I never knew there was a Data plan like that. Una too dey hide update I swear.”

The price hike affects other plans, including a revised 1.8GB monthly plan for ₦1,500, which replaces the previous 1.5GB plan priced at ₦1,000.

Similarly, the telecommunication’s 20GB plan has increased from ₦5,500 to ₦7,500, and the 90-day 1.5TB plan has skyrocketed from ₦150,000 to ₦240,000, among other changes.
