Warri-Itakpe Train Accident: Atiku Mourns Victims, Calls for Stronger Transportation Safety Measures

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has mourned the victims of the Warri-Itakpe train accident near Agbor, Delta State.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, in a statement on Tuesday, confirmed that four passengers died and 24 others sustained serious injuries after four coaches capsized and one derailed on the Warri-Itakpe train service.

The accident resulted in the deaths of two adult females, one adult male, and an infant.

Engr. Adebiyi disclosed that the crash involved 482 persons on board, comprising 442 passengers and 40 crew members, security personnel, and service providers.

Reacting to the tragic incident, Atiku expressed sadness and extended his condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives.

He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment and wished them strength during this difficult time.

Atiku further sympathised with the Delta State Government and residents of the state, while commending the government’s swift response, emergency personnel, and all those involved in the rescue efforts.

He noted that the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need to strengthen safety standards and emergency preparedness across Nigeria’s transportation system.

“May God grant eternal rest to the departed, comfort the bereaved, and restore good health to the injured,” he added.
