Lagos Govt. Begins Enforcement on Illegal Land Reclamation Projects

The Lagos State Government has commenced full enforcement against all land reclamation projects without Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Approval and Drainage Clearance across the state.

This was disclosed in a public notice signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, with enforcement taking effect on Wednesday.

Wahab stated that the commencement follows the expiration of a 7-day ultimatum issued by the state government, emphasising that the notice was published in national newspapers on September 18 and 19.

“This is to notify the general public, particularly individuals, developers and corporate bodies engaging in unauthorized land reclamation and waterfront encroachment that the grace period of seven days for compliance and cessation of illegal reclamation activities as contained in our earlier public notices have since expired on 25th September, 2025,” he said.

The Commissioner noted that, in accordance with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017 and other extant regulations, enforcement actions will be taken without further notice.

He highlighted the actions, including the removal of all illegal reclamation structures and fillings without the Statutory EIA and Drainage Clearance Certificate, the seizure of all reclamation equipment and materials found on prohibited sites, as well as the prosecution of offenders in accordance with the Environmental and Urban Development Laws of the state.

Wahab also warned the public against patronising or buying from illegal reclamation operators, explaining that these actions are necessary to protect the environment, prevent flooding, and ensure public safety.

He further urged the public and project developers to visit the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources at Block 16, Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, to inquire about acquiring EIA Approval and Drainage Clearance.
