Nigerian Footballer Threatens Lawsuit Against Sevilla Over Alleged Breach of Try-Out Agreement

Nigerian footballer Oladipupo Osineye has threatened legal action against Spanish football club Sevilla over an alleged breach of a try-out agreement reached through social media platform X.

Osineye, who uses the handle @TheRealOlagreat on X, had on January 20, 2025, tagged the club’s English account, requesting an opportunity to try out with the team.

“@SevillaFC_ENG How many reposts for tryout with your team?” he had written.

In response, the club’s account replied that 100,000 reposts would earn him a try-out opportunity.

ThelensNG reports that Osineye subsequently achieved the target, as the post generated more than 100,000 reposts and over 15 million views, significantly increasing engagement for the club online. However, more than a year later, the player claims he has yet to receive an invitation for the promised try-out

In a notice of breach of contract dated May 29, 2026, and addressed to the club president, Lagos-based law firm Glide Advisory Barristers & Solicitors disclosed that it was acting on the instruction of the footballer.

The letter, signed by Precious Oloware Esq., described Osineye as a professional footballer based in Lagos State who plays as a central midfielder and possesses “an elite mentality befitting of a world-class athlete.”

According to the solicitors, the exchange between Osineye and the club on X constituted a valid and binding electronic contract, arguing that the essential elements of contract — offer, acceptance and consideration — were present in the arrangement.

The lawyers further claimed that after Osineye fulfilled the repost target, both parties exchanged a series of emails concerning travel arrangements, visa processing and other logistics relating to the proposed try-out in Spain.

Despite this, the firm alleged that Sevilla has failed to take concrete steps toward facilitating the player’s trip or honouring its commitment. “There is no doubt on the existence of a binding contract between our client and the Club,” the letter stated.

The solicitors argued that Osineye had conferred substantial benefits on the club through the massive publicity generated by the viral campaign and insisted that Sevilla could no longer deny the existence of an agreement.

The firm demanded that the Spanish club fulfil its obligations within a reasonable time upon receiving the notice or risk facing a civil lawsuit.

It also revealed that the footballer turned down approaches from other clubs because of Sevilla’s commitment.

While expressing hope for an amicable resolution, the lawyers warned that legal proceedings would commence should the club fail to respond positively to the demand.

As of the time of filing this report, Sevilla FC had not publicly responded to the allegations or the legal notice.
