WIMA Nigeria, FESAN to Host Webinar on Women’s Inclusion in Maritime

In a renewed effort to deepen inclusion and translate policy into tangible opportunities for women in the maritime sector, the Women in Maritime Africa (WIMA Nigeria), in collaboration with the Female Seafarers Association of Nigeria (FESAN), has concluded plans to host a high-level webinar to mark the International Day of Women in Maritime.

The virtual event, slated for May 18, 2026, is expected to bring together key industry stakeholders, maritime professionals, and female seafarers to deliberate on advancing women’s participation and leadership within the sector.

With the theme, “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Maritime Excellence for Women,” the organisers said the webinar is aimed at bridging the persistent gap between policy frameworks and the lived realities of women in the industry.

Speaking on the initiative, the organisers noted that while advocacy for gender inclusion has gained traction over the years, there remains an urgent need to translate such policies into measurable outcomes, particularly for female seafarers who continue to face structural and operational challenges.

The webinar will feature Dr. (Mrs.) Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin, Honourable Commissioner at the Bayelsa State Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, as keynote speaker. She is expected to deliver a keynote address that will highlight practical pathways for strengthening women’s role in Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy space.

According to the organisers, the collaboration between WIMA Nigeria and FESAN underscores a shared commitment to fostering stronger partnerships, enhancing visibility for women, and creating sustainable opportunities across the maritime value chain.

Participants at the event will also have the opportunity to engage industry leaders, share professional experiences, and gain insights into improving standards, inclusion, and overall excellence in maritime operations.

WIMA Nigeria expressed optimism that the webinar would not only stimulate meaningful discussions but also catalyse sustained actions towards building a more inclusive and progressive maritime industry in Nigeria.
